Who can join? All girls in the 9th - 12th grades at all swimming and diving levels can participate. We welcome anyone who wants to work hard and learn to swim and dive competitively. There are no cuts!
How do I join? Reach out to Coach Coley or any member of the PHS Girls Swim & Dive Team, or join us for practices.
What equipment do I need? Swimmers and divers will need to have a one-piece swimsuit for practice. Practice suits made of polyester tend to last longer. They are more expensive but well worth the cost as other swimsuits tend to wear out from the chlorine a little bit faster. As a note, suits tend to loosen up from use over time. You want the suit to be tight when purchased. A team suit is purchased at the beginning of the season. Families cover 1/2 the cost of the suit. Swimmers should also bring a towel, water bottle, a pair of goggles, and a swim cap to each practice. Dryland practice will require tennis shoes and work-out clothes each day.
Where do we practice? Practices are held in the in the Mike Slagle Aquatic Center at the Plymouth High School. During the season, practices are typically held in the early morning (optional) and in the afternoon/after school (mandatory).
What can I do to prepare for the swim season? Swim on your own (just being in the water and swimming some laps can be really helpful for new swimmers to prepare for the season) or join a club swim team. At the very least, try to do some form of active exercise each day!
When are the meets? The swim & dive season generally runs from mid-August until mid-November for varsity participants. For junior varsity, the season runs from mid-August until the end of October. Meets are generally held on Tuesdays and Thursdays around 6pm along with a couple of Saturday afternoon (diving in the morning) invitational meets.
How do combined JV & Varsity meets work? For each event, JV swimmers will generally appear in the earlier heat(s), followed by the Varsity heat. Heats are seeded by entry time. In some events (i.e., the 200 IM and 500 Free) there may only be one combined JV/Varsity heat.
Does diving happen before the meet or in the middle? It depends…for dual meets diving generally takes place after the 50 free but it will sometimes be moved to before the meet due to various circumstances. For championship meets, the dive final is usually the first event, taking place before the swimming competition, and a 10-15 minute intermission/warm-up will be added to the swimming portion of the meet following the 50-free event.
How many swimmers can participate in an individual event? For dual and tri-meets each team is limited to 3 point-scoring swimmer entries per individual event, and 2 relay teams per event. At invitational and championship meets, the limit is increased to 4 entries per individual event, but only one relay. Depending on the meet, additional swimmers and relay teams may compete in the event but they are considered “exhibition” and are not eligible to score points. So, even if a swimmer designated as “exhibition” finishes in the top 5 for the event, they will not score meet points (aka, varsity points).
How many events can a swimmer swim? Each participant may compete in four events, with a maximum of two individual events. So 2 individual/2 relay or 1 individual/3 relays maximum.
How is “exhibition” determined? The coaches determine who will be considered “exhibition” when completing the meet entries.
What other activities happen during the season? Captain practices, team dinners, team sleepover, and homecoming parade/float are all team building activities that you can participate in during the season.
Is there logo apparel? There is additional team apparel available for swimmers and supporters to purchase at the beginning of the season.
